Movie news Web site IESB.net has posted a video interview with G.I. Joe comic creator and movie consultant Larry Hama. In the interview, Hama admits he was "happily blown away" by what he saw on the first day of filming in Los Angeles last week: "You get sort of apprehensive, you know, about how...how things are going to be. Behind the scenes look at G.I. Joe film shown at 2008 Toy Fair
Our very own Justin Bell (aka General Hawk of General's Joes) attended this year's Toy Fair trade show in New York City and was on hand for a sneak peek at production art, animatics, and more from Paramount Pictures' upcoming blockbuster film, G.I. Joe. Here's what Justin had to say about what he saw: QUOTE Hasbro showed a 10 minute "behind the scenes" look at the movie production, including some animatics (non final computer generated animation) some concept art, and interviews with the people involved in the movie's production. The piece involved lots of fast-moving pictures, it was tough to make out lots of the details.
One sequence involved a pair of operatives in "Nano-tech suits" that enable them to move very fast. The animatic shows them zipping through the streets while being chased by rocket-firing vehicles. There is lots of impressive acrobatics (flipping through moving vehicles, dodging rocket fire, etc...) and aspects that seem like they will look VERY cool in live action form.
As an advance warning: the film looks like it will be a lot more future-tech science fiction based than super real-life military action. I know this will bother a lot of people, but I think it could be cool. I mean, let's face it, G.I. Joe has always had a very strong science fiction element from the very start, so I think certain aspects of this make sense. The vehicle concepts are VERY cool (a nice Night Raven-esque Blackbird type of fighter jet).
There are going to be jetpacks, floating weapon-platforms, glider jets, submarines, and all sorts of pretty neat looking future weapons. Straight up, this will disappoint some of the military purists, but I think to the general public who's looking for a new and exciting effects-laden action flick, it will satisfy. It was all very early stuff, but also looked pretty cool, too.
We got quick looks at a couple of what looked to be COBRA Troopers in animatic form, and they were wearing a nice armored, blue uniform that looked fairly COBRA-like (from what I could tell with the quick flash). Continue to watch Joesightings for more news and information about G.I. Joe, which hits theaters in 2009! Comments(0) - Posted on Sun, 17 Feb 2008 by Sentinel (PM) - Read More
First look at General Hawk from the G.I. Joe movie
Filming of Paramount Pictures' G.I. Joe has begun in Los Angeles, and IESB.net has posted the first image of Dennis Quaid in costume as General Hawk. From the photo, it appears that Hawk is a four-star general, currently the highest rank an officer can achieve in three of the four branches of the U.S. military. Editor's note: The uniform that Quaid is wearing in the photo does not appear to match any style currently in service by the U.S. armed forces (although it appears to share elements with some historical Air Force uniforms. Could it be possible that Hawk is an Air Force officer in the film?) Since G.I. Joe is set in the near future, the uniform may reflect a projected style or it could be distinctive of whatever command G.I. Joe belongs to in the film. I'm sure we'll find out more as filming progresses. Click on the link above to check it out. Click here to discuss the image in our forums. Thanks to Airborne Rigger for the news! MTV interviews Dennis Quaid about G.I. Joe
MTV Movies has posted a short video interview with actor Dennis Quaid, who will play General Hawk in Paramount's G.I. Joe. During the interview, Quaid compares G.I. Joe to early James Bond films such as Dr. No, with Cobra portrayed similarly to Bond's nemesis SPECTRE (which, perhaps not coincidentally, is another fictonal terrorist organization determined to rule the world). Quaid also confirmed that characters such as the Xamot, Tomax, Shipwreck, and Wild Bill would not be in the film, but could appear in sequels. Click on the link above to watch the interview. Paramount enlists G.I. Joe comic creator Larry Hama
Yo Joe! According to LatinoReview.com, comic creator Larry Hama has joined Paramount Pictures' live-action G.I. Joe production as a creative consultant. An accomplished writer, editor, and "drawer" (his term, not ours!) of comics, including Wolverine and Batman, Hama is best known for writing nearly every issue of the classic G.I. Joe series in the 80s and 90s. Hama also developed the biographical "file cards" that came with each G.I. Joe action figure, and was the basis for the character Tunnel Rat (Hama himself served as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal specialist during the Vietnam War). This announcement should be great news for Joe fans who consider Hama's work on G.I. Joe definitive. Thanks to Drew99Erin for the info and link! Click here to discuss this story in our forums. G.I. Joe script review at LatinoReview.com
Warning! The following link contains adult language and spoilers regarding the G.I. Joe movie. Proceed at your own risk! (Kids - ask your parents to check the article out first.) LatinoReview.com has posted a review of the final shooting script for Paramount Pictures' live-action G.I. Joe movie. According to reviewer El Mayimbe, the final script, which was written by Stuart Beattie, is a thoroughly modern and international take on the Joe story that incorporates elements from the classic G.I. Joe comic series written by Larry Hama. El Mayimbe, who says he's a "proud die-hard red blooded G.I. Joe geek," was apparently so impressed by Beattie's script that he called it a "love letter to G.I. Joe fans" and a "complete faithful translation." His final grade for the script was an A+. Ray Park to play Snake-Eyes?
According to Slashfilm.com, actor and martial artist Ray Park has been cast as Snake Eyes in the live-action G.I. Joe film. QUOTE ("slashfilm.com") I have just confirmed that Star Wars Episode 1 star Ray Park has been cast as Snake Eyes in Stephen Sommer's big screen live-action adaptation of G.I. Joe.
Snake Eyes is one of the original members of the G.I. Joe series. Hasbro has released over 30 figures of the character since his debut in 1982. Not much is known about the ninja master's real identity, as it has remained classified throughout the series. The U.S. Army Sergeant First Class (E-7) is known for his stealth like movements and extensive knowledge of multiple forms of martial arts. Snake-Eyes is romantically involved with fellow G.I. Joe member Master Sergeant Shana M. O'Hara, a.k.a. Scarlett.
Fans of the toyline, animated series and comic books have been worried about this live-action adaptation since story information began to leak. Hasbro had to publicly reassure fans. And things got worse when the first casting announcement revealed Sienna Miller (Stardust, Factory Girl) as (possibly) the Baroness, the exotic and evil sidekick of Destro. But I think everyone will agree that Ray Park is perfect for the role of Snake Eyes. Ray Park has been the fan favorite to take on the role, featured as a top placement on many fans dream cast listings. Park is best known for playing Darth Maul in Star Wars Episode I The Phantom Menace. Park also played Toad in the original X-Men film. This bit of casting gives me a lot more faith in this project.
Here is the official plot synopsis:
"From the Egyptian desert to deep below the polar ice caps, the elite co-ed GI JOE team, based from it’s headquarters The Pit, deploys the latest in next-gen spy and military equipment to fight crooked arms dealer Destro and the growing threat of the mysterious COBRA organization from plunging the world into chaos."
G.I. Joe will hit theaters on August 7, 2009. "Now You Know, and Knowing is Half The Battle." Please discuss/comment on this topic here: http://www.joesightings.com/forums/index.php?showtopic=6739 Comments(3) - Posted on Wed, 05 Dec 2007 by PollyLover (PM) - Read More

More rumors of potential cast members for G.I. Joe movie
Sources from Aint It Cool News are siting a Variety report confirming that the G.I. Joe motion picture is indeed a "go" at Paramount. Variety is also reporting that newcomer Sam Worthington is in talks to be a lead in the film. Sam Worthington's biography can be found at the Internet Movie Database here and he is slated to appear in the upcoming James Cameron film "Avatar". Variety reports the following: "Paramount, pleased with revisions done by scribe Stuart Beattie, has officially set a Feb. 13 start date for "G.I. Joe," an event-sized film that went from a pre-strike question mark to an anchor of the studio's summer 2009 release schedule. Paramount is in talks with up-and-comer Sam Worthington to star, and the studio was down to working out any scheduling overlap with Fox, which has Worthington starring in the James Cameron-directed "Avatar.""Click here for the full article. Paramount greenlights G.I. Joe; movie reportedly given $170 million budget
According to IGN.com, Paramount Pictures has reportedly greenlighted the G.I. Joe live-action film. The production, which begins filming with director Stephen Sommers (The Mummy, The Mummy Returns) early next year, has also reportedly been given a $170 million budget. IGN claims that Paramount's decision to move the film forward had less to do with the looming writer's strike and more to do with a potential loss of rights if Paramount didn't commit to making G.I. Joe within a specific time frame. For more information, including confirmation that George Clooney is NOT going to be involved in G.I. Joe, click on the original story link above. GI Joe.com has posted a message from Hasbro regarding recent internet rumors concerning the G.I. Joe motion picture. There are some very reassuring words in this message, debunking the fact that the G.I. G.I. Joe film script rewrites full steam ahead
The Los Angeles Times has an interesting article concerning the hectic pace that script writers are working at to get films prepared for release prior to the impending strike that threatens to dramatically affect the movie making industry. While the article focuses on Wolverine mostly, there are some tidbits in there about the upcoming Paramount G.I. Joe feature as well: "Given what's at stake and the [time] we have left, our writers on every project are working under inhuman amounts of pressure," said Lorenzo di Bonaventura, who is producing "G.I. Joe," Paramount Pictures' would-be tent-pole movie for summer 2009, which as of last week hadn't even been officially greenlighted.
In September, the "G.I. Joe" team hired "Collateral" scribe Stuart Beattie to begin a total overhaul of the script. Beattie turned in his first draft by the beginning of October and is now busily working on a second set of revisions, which are due back to Paramount on Oct. 31."Click here to check out the full article, which has some interesting information about a number of upcoming Hollywood releases. Reaction across the Internet over recent movie announcements
When Joefans heard all about the "Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity" there was, of course, an uproar. For the entirety of it's existence in the United States, G.I. Joe has always represented the best American fighting men the country has had to offer. After all, in the 80's, they were the "Real American Heroes". Times have changed, and Hollywood seems to be reacting to that, and various online sources throughout the internet are, in turn, posting their own reactions, pretty much all of them resoundingly negative. AintitCoolNews.comSlashdot.orgCopious Dissent BlogNPR News BlogFoxNews.comJudging by the widespread reaction so far, it sounds like both Hasbro and Paramount would face pretty strong criticism to this move, so let's hope everyone involved thinks long and hard as these decisions are made. Is it more important to cater to an international audience that is a good deal smaller than the American movie-going public, or would they be better served retaining the American roots and ensuring a stronger, more faithful following stateside? Looks like we're off to a fun ride as movie production continues full steam ahead. Comments(29) - Posted on Sat, 08 Sep 2007 by General Hawk (PM) - Read More
Is the G.I. Joe film getting back its American roots?
According to an exclusive article posted on IESB.net, there seem to be changes in the working G.I. Joe live action movie script to make the team once again an American military unit, and to bring the team back to the United States instead Brussels. Whether this has to do with fan backlash or a revised view of the franchise's history by the film's creative team is unclear, but this seems to be a step in the right direction. Joe is now a Brussels-based outfit that stands for Global Integrated Joint Operating Entity, an international co-ed force of operatives who use hi-tech equipment to battle Cobra, an evil organization headed by a double-crossing Scottish arms dealer."We'll be following this very closely. Sommers out, Action Man still in G.I. Joe movie
According to reports posted at IGN.com and IESB.net, Stephen Sommers ( The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, Van Helsing) is apparently not going to direct the upcoming G.I. Joe live-action film. Sommers reportedly wanted more money than Paramount was willing to pay. New rumors, however, have surfaced that Len Wiseman ( Underworld, Live Free or Die Hard) may be in the running as a potential director for G.I. Joe. IESB.net also reports that the film's producers are moving ahead with plans to make G.I. Joe more appealing to international audiences by including Action Man and a team that is "not exclusively American or British." IESB says the characters "will still be based from the original cartoons, toys and comics but with a globe-trotting flavor." Actor Jason Statham ( The Transporter, Crank) is apparently the studio's first choice for playing Action Man in the film. Editor's comment: Stay tuned as we continue to watch this potential train wreck. Comments(32) - Posted on Wed, 15 Aug 2007 by Sentinel (PM) - Read More
